The International Finance Corporation (IFC) provided Airtel Africa with a US$150 million loan to help expand and modernise its mobile networks, targeting improved connectivity in underserved communities across the continent.
The financing will be provided to two unnamed Airtel Africa subsidiaries and will support network expansion and upgrades over the coming years. The investment forms part of the operator’s strategy to grow data coverage, strengthen network capacity and increase access to digital services.
Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar said: “Through our ongoing partnership with IFC, we are advancing the expansion and modernisation of our network, underpinning a core pillar of our strategy. It also reflects our ambition to accelerate digital inclusion, scale access to digital tools and services, and enable greater economic opportunity for individuals and communities.”
The funding builds on an existing partnership between IFC and Airtel Africa, with the development finance institution stating that improved mobile infrastructure can help support small businesses, entrepreneurs, mobile money agents and workers that increasingly rely on digital connectivity.
IFC Acting Regional Manager for Infrastructure in Eastern Africa Dan Croft said: “Expanding digital connectivity is ultimately about expanding opportunity. Stronger networks help businesses reach new customers, enable workers to access wider markets, and connect young people to skills and services that shape their future.”
The investment comes as Airtel Africa continues to prioritise network expansion and digital financial services across its 14 African markets, where it has been growing both mobile data usage and mobile money adoption as part of its strategy to drive financial and digital inclusion.
