Gabon has inaugurated its first Tier III international-standard data centre, in a move widely described as being aimed at strengthening the country’s digital sovereignty and expanding its digital infrastructure.
Cameroon headquartered data centre operator ST Digital opened its facility in Gabon late last week. The company broke ground on the facility back in August 2025. It is located in the Nkok Special Economic Zone, an industrial park near the country’s capital, Libreville.
The Tier III-certified data centre has been built to international standards. It will enable government institutions and businesses to host sensitive data locally, reducing dependence on foreign data infrastructure while improving data protection and operational resilience.
More information about the data centre’s capacity and size does not seem to have been revealed. However, government officials have apparently suggested that the data centre will serve as a cornerstone of Gabon’s long-term digital transformation strategy.
It is expected to support digital public services, strengthen cybersecurity capabilities, facilitate artificial intelligence applications, and provide secure infrastructure for businesses, helping drive innovation and economic growth.
It also seems that the country’s Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ST Digital Gabon to broaden access to the facility. Under the agreement, startups supported by the ministry will benefit from preferential access to professional hosting services, enabling emerging companies to leverage enterprise-grade digital infrastructure at reduced costs.
ST Digital is based in Cameroon and provides cloud services in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Togo, Gabon, and Cote d’Ivoire.
As the Data Centre Dynamics website points out, the total number of data centres in Gabon is unclear. Referencing the database Data Center Journal, it says there could be three data centres in Libreville, including the Gabon Internet eXchange and Airtel Gabon.
