Huawei supports digital transformation of Argentinian agriculture

Tech giant Huawei and the Argentinian Agricultores Federados Argentinos (AFA) association have signed a cooperation agreement to accelerate the digital transformation of Argentina’s agricultural sector.

This will involve introducing artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing to boost crop yields and lower costs.

The AFA is the main agricultural cooperative in Argentina and one of the largest in Latin America.

The partnership covers more than 36,000 affiliated producers in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Cordoba and Entre Rios.

There are four parts to the agreement. One invoves joint exploration of technological infrastructure solutions and operational connectivity to optimise communication and data flows in the field.

The two parties also intend to develop big data and artificial intelligence tools to process analytical information collected in the field. This will help producers in decision-making and strengthen the cooperative’s institutional management.

The third part is involves incorporating renewable sources, such as solar panels, into AFA’s facilities and its members’ properties.

Finally, Huawei and AFA intend to develop digital training and education programmes for technical teams and producers.

The practical results of these efforts could mean expanding wireless and fixed network infrastructure so farmers can use sensors across their fields to more efficiently monitor crop yields. Similarly, using AI and big data to analyse weather and soil could make planting and watering more efficient, while the use of renewable energy could reduce farm electricity costs and help the environment.

The BNamericas news service reports that, according to the two parties, the progress of the initiatives and pilot projects will be monitored by a joint committee.
