MTN Digital infrastructure – a.k.a. Bayobab – announced on Saturday that its subsidiary Bayobab Zambia has partnered with Vodacom Mozambique to interconnect their fibre networks at the Zambia–Mozambique border.
Bayobab said the partnership enhances cross-border connectivity and establishes a key fibre route linking inland networks to subsea cable systems on Africa’s eastern and western seaboards – particularly the recently completed 2Africa subsea cable system.
Bayobab Zambia MD Lillian Mutwalo said the Zambia–Mozambique interconnection will enable direct international connectivity to 2Africa, enhance network resilience, and accelerate digital inclusion across Southern Africa.
"By creating a seamless link to the 2Africa cable system, we are positioning Zambia as a regional hub for connectivity and enabling businesses and communities to thrive in the digital economy," Mutwalo said in a statement.
The project also strengthens regional integration through improved cross‑border connectivity between Zambia and Mozambique, supporting greater trade and economic collaboration, as well as digital inclusion, said Vodacom Mozambique MD Simon Karikari.
"By enhancing cross border resilience, we are accelerating access to high quality digital services that drive economic growth and support the Government ‘s internet for All ambition by 2030,” he said.
The launch comes two weeks after Bayobab signed a deal with Mozambican operator TMCEL to support and manage its international communication services, including international voice, international roaming and IPX.
