Eutelsat announced on Tuesday that it partnering with Airtel Gabon to provide OneWeb LEO satellite connectivity to passenger trains in Gabon to support on-board Wi-Fi services.
The solution – which has already been successfully tested – is being implemented as part of a national initiative led by the Gabonese Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation and the Ministry of Transport, Merchant Marine and Logistics, in collaboration with the Transgabon Railway Operating Company (SETRAG).
Airtel Gabon MD Thomas Herbert Gutjahr said that by extending LEO connectivity to rail transport, the project will support Gabon’s efforts to integrate digital services into public transportation, modernise the railway experience and enhance passenger comfort, while enabling reliable broadband services along long-distance routes beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.
“Working with Eutelsat, the government, and national partners such as SETRAG, we are supporting the delivery of onboard connectivity services that enhance passenger comfort and support the integration of digital services into Gabon’s rail network,” he said in a statement.
The deployment also extends the reach of Eutelsat’s OneWeb LEO services in Africa and reflects the Group’s continued focus on working with governments and telecom operators to support digital infrastructure development, including in transport, said Philippe Baudrier, VP for Africa at Eutelsat.
“It also reinforces our partnership with Airtel and establishes a strong foundation for additional rail connectivity projects across Africa,” he added.
