Papua New Guinea’s state-owned telecoms network wholesaler PNG DataCo has reportedly signed a five-year deal with Digicel PNG to provide it with more bandwidth and stronger support for its network.
According to a report in The National on Wednesday, Digicel will use the bandwidth for its long-haul, international and metro fibre services.
The extra bandwidth will provide more capacity for Digicel’s mobile sites, improve data services and help the telco prepare for 5G, the report said.
PNG DataCo CEO Paul Komboi told The National that the agreement will also boost Digicel’s network reliability by strengthening backup routes between Port Moresby and Lae, and improving repair response through dedicated contractor support.
“When faults occur, response must be faster. When traffic grows, the network must hold,” Komboi said. “When customers need service, reliability must not be optional.”
Komboi also said that the partnership with Digicel will push DataCo to perform better for all of its customers, according to the report.
“Digicel’s network growth challenges us to innovate, expand and deliver with greater discipline. That is a good challenge,” he said.
