HBL Engineering, an Indian research-based engineering company, and RAD, a provider of advanced networking solutions, have partnered on a project for Indian Railways.
RAD will partner with HBL to supply an advanced networking solution for the deployment of HBL's safety and operations-focused Kavach system for the state-owned operator of India's national railway system.
The companies explain that this collaboration aims to establish a reliable and efficient communication infrastructure vital for modern railway applications. It will effect this by combining HBL's expertise in railway signalling and Kavach solutions with RAD’s networking technology.
Kavach, India’s indigenous automatic train protection (ATP) system, is designed to improve railway safety and support advanced train operations. HBL Engineering has been a significant contributor to the development and deployment of Kavach, securing multiple contracts across Indian Railways.
Under the agreement, RAD will deliver a comprehensive management platform. This includes a customised Layer 2 and Layer 3 industrial-grade networking solution for HBL Engineering's use in the Kavach project. The solution is engineered to provide Ethernet connectivity, addressing the networking demands of mission-critical railway infrastructure.
Failsafe communications infrastructure is clearly a critical component for modern railway systems, as MVV Vidyasagar, president (electronics group) at HBL Engineering, explains, noting: “HBL approached RAD for a customised solution meeting Indian Railways’ specific design architecture. It had to meet RDSO [Indian Railways] standards, certification criteria, and most importantly, comply with the Indian government’s DoT certifications and security compliances.” He adds: “RAD has delivered on every point.”
