Mobile congestion will become a major issue in emerging markets during 2013 as smartphones take root.

  • Mobile Congestion will become a story in 2013. In developed countries, when 3G was launched, the networks were not ready to become the on-ramp to the Internet due to the use of smartphones. As 3G deployments continue in emerging markets, and as the price of smartphones continue to drop, we will see congestion issues mount.
  • We will continue to see innovative Value-Added Services (VAS) be deployed. These could range from video enabled VAS (because of the 3G networks) that involves health, general communication (like video SMS) or entertainment. Whatever they are, we’ll see some new and innovative services deployed.
  • As the industry moves towards full-scale IP networks, the problem of interconnecting all these networks with all the different service providers becomes more important to resolve. Behind the scenes, the infrastructure providers and service providers will be working hard to resolve this. One such mechanism will be deployment of the IPX framework in the emerging markets.
