Du and Nokia deploy six-carrier aggregation tech on 5G-A network

UAE-based telco du said on Friday it has teamed with Nokia to deploy six-carrier aggregation across FDD and TDD spectrum on its commercial standalone 5G-Advanced network, which it’s claiming as a world-first.

Du said it has successfully aggregated 420 MHz of spectrum bandwidth using six 5G New Radio (NR) component carriers across the 3.6 GHz, 2.6 GHz, 2.1 GHz, 1.8 GHz and 600 MHz bands using Nokia’s commercial Habrok massive MIMO radios. Du also said the carrier aggregation deployment was validated using the latest available generation of 5G-A devices.

Aggregating six carriers increases the amount of network capacity that can be made available to compatible 5G-A devices where the 5G+ icon is visible, enabling faster data speeds, greater capacity and stronger network performance, said Danial Mausoof, VP of Nokia’s MI Segment for MEA.

“Carrier aggregation is crucial to getting the best possible 5G advanced performance out of scattered spectrum assets,” he said in a statement.

Du CTO Saleem AlBlooshi said the increased throughput and seamless connectivity will support powerful AI features and next-generation applications on new 5G-A devices.

“This achievement demonstrates how we can make greater use of our spectrum to create more capacity and deliver stronger network performance as customer needs evolve,” he said in a statement. “It also represents an important step in advancing our 5G+ network while building the foundations for the journey towards 6G, in line with the UAE’s ambitions for next-generation connectivity.
