XLSmart and ZTE expand partnership to include AI-powered 5G and FWA

ZTE revealed on Tuesday it has signed an MoU with Indonesian telco XLSmart to expand their existing cooperation into the realm of AI-powered 5G networks and fixed wireless access (FWA).

Under the MoU – which was signed during last month’s MWC Shanghai 2026 event but publicly announced yesterday – the two companies will jointly develop end-to-end AI capabilities across XLSmart’s RANs, transport network, core network and network operations.

The objective is to leverage AI-powered automation and intelligent analytics to analyze network conditions, anticipate changes in traffic demand, and optimize network resources more dynamically. XLSmart said this will help it simplify network operations, improve service agility, and respond more effectively to changes in traffic demand.

AI can also deliver more efficient power consumption for network operations. ZTE said that its work with XLSmart so far has found that its AI-powered energy efficiency solutions have demonstrated energy savings of more than 10% without sacrificing network performance and customer experience.

The MoU also calls for XLSmart and ZTE to add value to its 5G network by expanding network capabilities, enabling new digital services, and establishing a stronger foundation for the next generation of connectivity.

That includes accelerating commercialization and growth of XLSmart’s 5G FWA offering in terms of network evolution and optimization, CPE innovation, enhanced broadband experiences, market expansion, and exploration of new commercial opportunities.

All of these initiatives aim to serve XLSmart’s plans to expand its blanket 5G coverage across Indonesia, and develop FWA as a key growth engine throughout the rest of 2026.

“Through our collaboration with ZTE, XLSmart is strengthening its ability to build a more intelligent, automated, and efficient network while continuing to deliver reliable digital experiences for customers,” said XLSmart president director Rajeev Sethi in a statement. “The collaboration will also support the development of our 5G and FWA businesses, improve the efficient use of network and energy resources, and create new opportunities to serve Indonesian households and businesses.”

“We aim to accelerate digital innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and create new broadband opportunities that generate greater value for consumers, enterprises, and the broader digital ecosystem,” added ZTE senior VP James Zhang.
