America Movil’s unit Claro is acquiring a 73% stake in Brazil-based broadband provider Desktop, marking a major move to strengthen its fixed-line presence in the country.
The transaction, valued at around BRL4 billion (US$760 million), will see Claro purchase 84,684,273 shares, according to the company’s press release. Claro also said it intends to seek the acquisition of the remaining shares through the stock exchange, subject to regulatory requirements.
Investment firm HIG Capital, which is selling its stake, said Desktop has undergone significant expansion since its acquisition in 2020. The company grew both organically and through 10 acquisitions, rapidly scaling its fibre footprint.
As a result, Desktop’s broadband subscriber base increased from 150,000 to more than 1.2 million users across 200 cities in the state of São Paulo. Its fibre network now spans approximately 58,000km.
Desktop went public in 2021, with HIG playing a central role in the IPO as part of its growth strategy.
The deal remains subject to closing conditions and approval from Brazilian regulatory authorities. The purchase price was calculated with shares valued at BRL20.82, based on Desktop’s net debt as of September 30.
Fernando Marques Oliveira, Managing Director and Head of H.I.G. Latin America, said the investment highlights the firm’s active approach to scaling portfolio companies.
“Desktop’s trajectory is a strong example of H.I.G.’s hands-on approach to accelerating growth. Working closely with an outstanding senior management team, we supported the Company’s expansion to become a leading fibre platform in Brazil, while also positioning the business as a highly strategic asset for industry players. This transaction underscores our ability to identify and execute on compelling value creation opportunities and we are gratified to have generated a very attractive result for our investors.”
