VNPT taps Ericsson for airport mobile comms upgrades

Ericsson said on Monday it is partnering with Vietnamese telco VNPT to install next-gen mobile infrastructure for major airport projects in Vietnam.

Under the partnership deal – which marks the first collaboration between the two companies in Vietnam's airport sector – VNPT will deploy Ericsson’s latest radios and RAN Compute solutions that provide high-capacity C-band coverage optimized for dense indoor environments typical of airport terminals.

Ericsson said the radio gear will also support multi-band configurations to ensure seamless compatibility and roaming for international travellers.

VNPT deputy CEO Nguyen Nam Long said the project will modernise passenger and operational connectivity, enabling secure, high-capacity communications to support critical airport operations as well as better passenger services and future-ready digital use cases.

“Airports worldwide are increasingly adopting advanced cellular connectivity to improve operational efficiency, streamline passenger experiences, and enable secure, seamless communications across airport systems and assets,” Nguyen said in a statement. “The enhanced connectivity that we will provide as part of this airport modernization project will support smarter operations across areas such as passenger processing, baggage handling, and asset management while helping the airport to operate more efficiently.”

Ericsson Vietnam president Rita Mokbel said the VNPT airport project represents an important milestone for the vendor's enterprise connectivity initiatives in Vietnam.

“By bringing our latest radio and baseband technology to this project, we are enabling secure, high-performance connectivity that will help modernize airport operations, enhance passenger experiences, and support the airport’s digital transformation journey,” she said.
