Fixed and mobile customers of Movistar Chile can now subscribe and pay for Netflix on their bill.
This initiative makes Movistar Chile the first telco in the country and the first operation of Telefónica in Latin America to offer this benefit. Movistar is a major telecommunications brand owned by Spain’s Telefónica, with a presence in Spain and in many Spanish-speaking countries.
Movistar customers who are not users of Netflix can subscribe through Movistar Play, a Movistar service that allows viewing of series and movies in any location with any enabled device.
The partnership between Telefónica and Netflix was announced in May. It includes the integration of the over-the-top (OTT) service into Telefónica’s TV and video platforms in Europe and Latin America.
Movistar has more than three million customers in Chile of its mobile and fixed services (broadband, telephony and pay TV).
This development further underlines the reach of OTT services in Latin America and their continuing ability to disrupt conventional platforms – as also shown by yesterday’s story from Mexico, where speakers at a TV-based event argued that (OTT) TV services in Mexico need greater regulation to ensure they pay taxes.
