India’s state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is now offering WiMAX, making it the country's first operator to provide wireless internet.

The company has gained a headstart on its competitors, refusing to wait for a final decision from the Indian government on when it will hold auctions for WiMAX and 3G spectrum allocation.

While BSNL is not currently paying for the spectrum, it will be obliged to do so once the auctions have been held. In addition to this, once the spectrum has been officially allocated, the operator will face increased competition.

However, in the meantime, villagers in Rajasthan will be the first beneficiaries of the service. Rural subscribers can access the service for Rs 140.

Originally intended to launch in 2008, the service was delayed following the decision that WiMAX spectrum would be auctioned alongside 3G spectrum.
