Ethio Telecom takes on satellite TV with video streaming service

Ethio Telecom announced on Friday it has launched an internet-based video streaming service called “teleStream”, which it’s positioning as an alternative to satellite TV.

At launch, the teleStream service features over 60 live TV channels and more than 350 video-on-demand (VOD) titles. The service is accessible via fixed broadband or SIM-enabled set-top boxes that convert non-smart TVs into smart ones.

Ethio Telecom said that all broadcasts are hosted on its local cloud for lower latency, and delivered to home broadband users via its fibre, 4G, and 5G technology infrastructure.

The telco is pitching teleStream as a “superior alternative” to satellite dish services, partly because it’s unbothered by weather conditions such as heavy rain. Ethio Telecom also said the service will benefit TV stations who can save on pricey foreign currency leases for satellites (which eliminates forex losses) by using local infrastructure instead.

Ethio Telecom is also targeting businesses such as hotels and guest houses, saying teleStream enables them to provide entertainment to international and local guests without the burden of maintaining hundreds of satellite dishes.

TeleStream is also being pitched as a information delivery method for remote learning and digital libraries in schools and universities, as well as providing awareness information in hospitals. Meanwhile, the service also promises a convenient platform for content providers, who can offer their work for free or via payment on teleStream, and ad agencies looking for new targeted advertising opportunities.

Alongside the teleStream launch, Ethio Telecom also announced iy has implemented a digital operations support system (OSS) that enables “zero-touch” service delivery online.

That means customers can now sign up for new services (including teleStream), amend existing service packages or report problems via the telco’s telebirr SuperApp, rather than having to go to a service centre. They can also use Ethio Telecom’s telebirr mobile money service to pay for services via the app.
