The operator has commissioned net mobile AG (net-m) to provide subscribers with the means to pay for apps and other digital goods quickly and securely via their mobile phone bill.

The Czech Republic has around 14.2 million connections on a population of 10.8 million, meaning that its penetration rate is one of the highest in the region. It is estimated that by 2018, 72.3% of mobile phone users in the Czech Republic will use smartphones, which is why established operators are focusing on growing revenue by marketing mobile content and applications.

Payment methods such as Direct Carrier Billing are especially attractive in the Czech Republic, which has relatively low bank account and credit card penetration. Online security concerns are another factor influencing uptake. Users of Microsoft Direct Carrier Billing do not need to store personal details online because their details are already registered with the mobile operator.

The Czech Republic also belongs to a group of 24 Countries where the operating system Windows Phone outsells Apple´s iOS. This is a noticeable trend that has been growing since 2013.

Sebastian Böhm, Senior Vice President and Executive Director responsible for Payment Solutions at net mobile AG, said: “The fact that Windows Phone has a strong foothold in the Czech Republic is one more good reason to offer Direct Carrier Billing as the most popular payment method among O2 customers in Windows Phone Store.”
