A plan to upgrade communications infrastructure connecting the major Myanmar cities of Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay, along with the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ), has been announced.

The project, under an official order from Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications, the country’s largest telecommunications operator, is to be carried out by four partners.

Sojitz Corporation is the principal contractor of the project. It has worked in infrastructure development projects worldwide. NTT Communications Corporation will be involved in upgrading international internet connection facilities.

NEC Corporation will provide optical communication equipment for core communication networks to expand transmission capacity to 1 Tbps, more than three times the current level. NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation, in collaboration with its subsidiary NESIC (Thailand) Ltd, will install dense wavelength division multiplexing equipment, carry out design, civil work and installation works of outside plant, and supply and install power supply equipment and air conditioning equipment.

Due to rapid economic growth in Myanmar, strengthening of communications infrastructure is now an urgently required task. The four participating companies plan to construct international internet connection facilities and communications infrastructure connecting the three cities and the Thilawa SEZ by 2021. Not only will communications capacity be more than tripled and significantly upgraded but the project will also support 5G services expected to be introduced in the near future.

Known as the Communication Network Improvement Project, and valued at about 7 billion yen (about $62 million), this will be the first ODA loan project in Myanmar’s communications field carried out under the auspices of the Japanese government.
