A1 Serbia has signed a deal to acquire a portion of Conexio’s infrastructure.

The operator – a unit of A1 Telekom Austria Group – will purchase 850km of piping from Conexio, allowing it to provide a link between A1’s markets of Bulgaria and Croatia as extending connections to Hungary and North Macedonia.

Once the transaction is closed, A1 Group expects to lay fibre in the pipes, bridging the gap between its markets. CommsUpdate reports that the deal is subject to standard merger conditions, and notes that the parties have agreed not to release details of the agreement to the public.

Alejandro Plater, COO at A1 Group, said: “With this deal we take our international connectivity to a new level. A1 Group will be able to offer state-of-the-art technology and with a total of 850km of connecting pipes across Serbia will be able to offer fibre along this track to our national and international customers… We will be able to offer services running on our own managed infrastructure from the Bosporus to Austria.”

Within Serbia, A1 is now deploying fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks – largely in Belgrade – as it prepares to launch commercial fixed broadband in 2024.
