Panama-based company Trans Ocean Network has announced that it will provide cable company Ocean Networks with landing party services and infrastructure in the Republic of Panama for the Caribbean Express submarine cable system.

Trans Ocean Network, which owns, operates and maintains (directly or indirectly), a terrestrial network of fibre optic cables in Panama, will provide Ocean Networks, which develops submarine cable systems for carriers, content providers, governments, and research and education groups, with cable landing stations, diverse dark fibre routes, cross-connects and associated services in Panama.

Under the terms of the MoU signed by the two companies, Ocean Networks will lease space in the Trans Ocean Network cable stations and procure 18 fibre pairs on diverse routes across Panama connecting Maria Chiquita in the Caribbean to Corozal in the Pacific.

The Caribbean Express system will have 18 fibre pairs utilizing space division multiplexing (SDM) technology. Initially the system will connect West Palm Beach (Florida), Balboa (Panama), Cancun (Mexico) and Cartagena (Colombia). The system is designed for future connectivity to the Bahamas, Guatemala, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

Caribbean Express is a new-build submarine cable system being developed by Ocean Networks. This strategic system will fill a requirement for the emerging markets of Central America by providing low-latency connectivity to the network access point of the Americas in Miami, Florida, and the network access point in Jacksonville, Florida.

Ocean Networks says the Caribbean Express system will be the only system in the Caribbean region that can offer full fibre pairs to the market. The planned ready-for-service date is early 2024.
