Three of Malaysia’s largest operators have closed a cooperation agreement for the development and sharing of fibre infrastructure across the market.

As reported by The Edge Markets, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in February 2020 between Celcom Axiata, Digi Telecommunications and Maxis with a view to collaborating on the development and deployment of fibre backhaul across the country.

Now, TeleGeography reports that the operators have concluded a deal that the signatories claim will enable faster and more efficient fibre backhaul deployment to base stations, as well as avoiding duplicate deployments of fibre infrastructure nationwide.

The cooperation agreement is reportedly valid for 20 years, with the operators claiming that it will substantially improve 4G connectivity nationwide, as well as boosting Malaysia’s fibre infrastructure in line with the development goals of the government’s Jalinan Digital Negara Plan (JENDELA).

Celcom CEO Idham Nawawi said that the agreement would “result in greater cost efficiencies for network infrastructure rollouts and services nationwide, supporting the ever-increasing traffic demand.”

Maxis’ chief executive Gokhan Ogut added that the deal “supports our collective ambition to provide fibre connectivity that is robust, pervasive, of high quality and affordable for all Malaysians. Infrastructure sharing is key to achieving this and enabling better efficiencies especially in narrowing the digital gap and generating a constructive environment for new technologies such as 5G.”

It is understood that the operators have already begun forming the network build-out and sharing strategies that they intend to enact following the deal.
