Data centre company Nxtra by Airtel, a subsidiary of Indian telecoms giant Bharti Airtel Limited, has begun construction of what is described as its largest data centre in East India.

The company will invest six billion rupees (about US$73.4 million) in the development of the new hyperscale centre. The 25 MW 13,900 square metre facility will be located in Kolkata’s Bengal Silicon Valley tech park in the east of the city and offer capacity for around 1,500 racks.

The plan is for the data centre to serve the markets of the east and north-east regions in India along with the other South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka). It will also fulfil the growing needs of enterprises and global cloud players. The data centre will be fully operational by 2024.

The new centre will be a green facility, sourcing clean energy for running its operation. Something similar is under way in Karnataka, [as we reported in September](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-technology/energy-sustainability/13966-nxtra-by-airtel-claims-data-centre-first-for-india.html).

Once ready, this will be Nxtra’s first large-scale facility in east India; the company already has 12 large and 120 edge facilities across the country.

And Nxtra isn’t stopping there. Massive investments are planned over the next four years to expand its capacity to over 400 MW and also to invest in renewable energy in order to reach net zero by 2031.
