The Brazilian government signed up for the US’ Clean Network initiative, a proposal for the construction of transparent and safe 5G networks, which could freeze out Huawei from yet another 5G market.

The announcement came as US under-secretary of state for economic growth, energy and environment Keith Krach, visited the Latin American nation seeking to gain its support for the initiative.

In a statement, the US announced Japan and Brazil “expressed commitment” to the Clean Network initiative, a Trump administration proposal to safeguard citizens’ privacy from aggressive intrusions by actors, such as the Chinese Communist government, an accusation China has long denied.

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo said in separate remarks, he was confident the US will sign an MoU on the Clean Network principles with Brazil in the near future.

Currently, the initiative has 49 countries signed up which included 27 out of 30 NATO members and 31 out of 37 OECD countries. Recent countries to have signed up includes Bulgaria, the Republic of Kosovo, the Republic of North Macedonia and the Slovak Republic.

The US previously offered financial support to Brazil’s operators, in a bid to encourage buying gear from Huawei’s infrastructure rivals. Brazilian operators Telefonica Brasil, Oi, TIM Participacoes are currently preparing for the country’s long-awaited spectrum auction in 2021 and have used Huawei parts in their constructions.

Reuters reported the Brazilian operators [snubbed a meeting with Krach](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-business/operator-news/10255-brazil-operators-snub-us-huawei-warning.html) who had previously stated “Huawei is the backbone of China’s global surveillance”, as the invitation was “not compatible with free-market choices” sources said.
