[Trends & Forecasts](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-business/telecom-trends-forecasts.html)## Three quarters of Zamtel fixed-line to be privatised by Zambian government

Privatisation is firmly on the agenda in Zambia as the country’s government has announced its desire to see 75% of fixed-line company Zamtel sold... The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) has launched an advertising campaign stressing the benefits of purchasing shares in the country’s fixed-line operator Zamtel. The quantity the Zambian Government has in mind is 75% - symptomatic of its desire to carry out an overall sell-off its assets.

The publicity campaign stated the initial stages in the privatisation: bidders were to submit their bids as a form of qualification to ultimately shares in Zamtel. Quite what the price will eventually be is a matter for non-disclosure by the government because of worries that issuing a price might affect bidding.

One thing that ids clear is that the Zambian Government will retain 25% ownership of Zamtel; whether this will also be sold in the end is not as yet certain. In this respect, the opposition parties in Zambia may obtain some solace as they wanted more Zambian ownership of Zamtel. A retention of equity would be preferable to a full sell-off.

\* Zamtel holds a monopoly of fixed-line communication in Zambia. Last year its revenue for voice and data was roughly US$100 million.
